Lie to me
Network: FOX TV-14
Runtime: 2009- present
Starring: Tim Roth, Kelli Williams, Mekhi Phifer
Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery
BRA Rating: Y-Why.
SUMMARY: Dr. Cal Lightman teaches a course in body language and makes an honest fortune exploiting it. He’s employed by various public authorities in various investigations, doing more when the police etc. fail to go the extra mile.
WHAT WE SEE: There is only one recurring black character and he is non-stereotypical as a competent and loyal FBI agent. There are times where, he could be seen as more of a hero but the creators have chosen to not show him in that light. The only other reference to Blacks is when popular media images are shown to display a particular emotion, particularly lying or guilt.
• Total Black Characters: (1) Agent Ben Reynolds appears on approximately one half of the episodes aired to date.
• Stereotypical Black Characters: (0) Agent Reynolds’ character is a ‘by the book’ stand up kind of guy. However, if this role had been cast with a white actor, his character would have a more ‘guns blazing’ heroic aspect.
• Stereotypes Scenes Agent Reynolds’ character is not stereotypically incompetent, but often scenes involving conflict are resolved by Dr. Gillian, a white female instead of the black male showing competence and heroics.
• Positive Black Role Models (1) The general tone of Agent Reynolds’ character is a noble-minded, patriotic, educated FBI agent.
• Positive Black Messages The show does show a black man on the enforcement side of law and government with a successful career.
