Dexter

Network: Showtime TV-MA
Runtime: 2006- present
Starring: Michael C. Hall, Jennifer Carpenter, Lauren Velez
Genre: Crime, Drama, Mystery
BRA Rating: Y-Why.

SERIES SUMMARY: A likable Miami police forensics expert moonlights as a serial killer of criminals whom he believes have escaped justice.

WHAT WE SEE: One positive is that Dexter’s victims are never Black. However, the only recurring Black character in the first seasons was Sgt. Doakes who has strong ethics, special ops training, and a dislike for Dexter. He is portrayed as an arrogant Jerk, and although he uncovers Dexter’s dark side, is killed and is easily portrayed as the ‘bad guy’.

• Total Black Characters: (1) Sergeant Doakes is the only one in the Miami Police Department that perceives that something is wrong with Dexter. But the limited glimpse into his character indicates serious personality flaws. And he is portrayed with a respected physical presence, not an intellectual one.
• Stereotypical Black Characters: (1) Despite being the one character to uncover Dexter’s cleverly hidden secret, Sgt. Doakes is portrayed with a respected physical presence, not an intellectual one.
• Stereotypes Scenes Confrontations with Dexter almost always turn physical with the first blow being delivered by Doakes. Dexter usually wins the interchange because of a clever plan.
• Positive Black Role Models (1) Contrary to Doake’s portrayal as a big strong buck, he is deemed honorable and a worthy opponent. Dexter is even inclined to murder his killer.
• Positive Black Messages Doakes lives by a code of morals and conduct that are above what is expected of him.
