SUMMARY: A high-intensity drama that takes the viewer through a day in the life of its main character, Counter Terrorist Agent, Jack Bauer. Each season of 24 documents a 24- hour period with each episode covering one hour of that day. Now in its 8th season, they attempt to secure nuclear materials being sold inside the United States by the Russian crime syndicate to foreign hostiles.
WHAT WE SEE: The series began with a Black candidate running for and subsequently being elected as President. While the candidate himself and most of the dramatic plot surrounding him is noble and reflective of political life, underlying plot twist often point to negative stereotypes: absent father, sapphire female, violent young black male, and “playing race card”.
• Total Black Characters: (4) Speaking supporting cast roles of President and First Family
• Stereotypical Black Characters: (2) The First Lady is depicted as conniving and deceitful, while the president‘s son battles legal issues stemming from resorting to violence.
• Stereotypes Scenes Scenarios that refer to stereotypical issues are portrayed as private, inter-familial communications indicating that stereotypical issues underscore the Black experience even if the public image does not support the stereotype.
• Positive Black Role Models (1) The President is often seen taking a strong, noble stance to various issues.
• Positive Black Messages (2)The ideal of a noble black president began somewhat before its time, the young people in his family are generally seen in a positive and educated light. Interesting that the series was canceled at the same time that the real President, who happens to be black, started suffering in the polls.
