Devon La Russa, the daughter of St. Louis Cardinals manager Tony La Russa, apologized and removed an offensive tweet she sent Sunday night regarding Texas Rangers manager Ron Washington,
Devon quickly deleted the tweet calling Rangers manager Ron Washington a “crack head” yesterday.
Here’s what she tweeted, “I saw a crack head doing ‘The Wash’ today. Coincidence? I think not…”
Devon , “I truly did not mean to be offensive! It’s a phrase I use, meant as a joke. Please don’t be offended! Go Cards!!” she said.
The phrase she used was a jab at the fact that Washington tested positive for cocaine and admitted to using the drug in 2009.
THE MEDIA SPIN
Now, remember she sent the tweet Sunday night. Two days later all over the mainstream sports media, ESPN, Sports Talk Shows. The talk was about Tony LaRussa, but it wasn’t about what his daughter tweeted Sunday night. The big story was about the mistake Tony LaRussa made during game five of the World Series on Monday night.
In the eighth inning, Tony LaRussa wanted to bring closer Jason Motte into the game. Both times, according to La Russa, the move went unmade because of a miscommunication between the dugout and the bullpen, which resulted in the wrong pitcher being sent into the game. LaRussa blamed the crowd noise drowning out the conversation over the bullpen phone for the mistake. This excuse has never been use before in a game. Most managers take their medicine and say they made a bad decision and picked the wrong pitcher. LaRussa is considered a “mastermind” by the media. All LaRussa had to do was admit he picked the wrong pitcher, end of story. However, his excuse about the miscommunication because of the bullpen phone is a flat out lie.
THE REAL
The tweet story started to pick up steam on the internet Monday. The mainstream media never mention the story. I believe Tony LaRussa was advice to create a storm to take the focus off his daughter. Tony LaRussa has been accused of being racially insensitive in the past. Baseball did not want this World Series to become about race. Black baseball players and fans have drop-off since the 90’s
This is the “WAG THE DOG” usually use in politics, but has been use in other genre. Rush Limbaugh did it before. Back in 2003, while an ESPN commentator, he said, then Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Donavan Mcnabb, was over rated, because the media wanted a Black quarterback to succeed. Rush knew his drug indictments was going to be a hot topic. So he wanted to deflect some of the attention off of his drug investigation.
