SUMMARY: Two black families from very different backgrounds and with very different dysfunctional converge on Martha’s Vineyard for a wedding that may or may not survive the differences.
WHAT WE SEE: This film has a well rounded array of characters that represent multiple body types, backgrounds, ideals, and desires. It depicts an affluent family, that admits to owning slaves, as some black families did, as well as a working class family. The men and women in the movie are both strong and caring, and realistically flawed.
• Total Black Characters: All of the speaking characters, except two minor roles, are black. There are also a number of non-speaking black roles.
• Stereotypical Black Characters: (2) Two of the blue collar uncles exhibit stereotypical ‘ghetto’ behavior in the interest of comedy, however, further development of their characters reveal many positive traits.
• Stereotypes Scenes (0) The bulk of the movie takes place in Martha’s vineyard, an area in Massachusetts, often related to the Kennedy legacy.
• Positive Black Role Models Despite inter-familial flaws, every character has an array of characteristics that are worthy of imitation and stem from love of family, sense of history, and their own brand of fearlessness.
• Positive Black Messages Primary theme of the movie is that monetary success does not make character but a sense of history and love draws families together.
