Stereotypes -- "Black Athletes date white women.” How often have we heard somebody mention this? Everybody has their own stereotypical reasons why black men want to date white women or why white women date black men. Some people think having a discussion about this topic is dumb and pointless since love is, or should be, color blind, and they have a point. Anybody has the right to be with whomever, regardless of race. But this is a topic for us because of the media. The media has a history of perpetuating this myth. So any time we see this being done in the media we have to comment on it. AOL sports recently had an article titled “Top Hottest 25 Sports Couples.” Seven out of the twenty-five athlete couples featured in this story were men of color. All seven of the black athletes featured were pictured with girl friends or wives. Not one of them was dating or married to a black female, giving this stereotypical lasting impression that all or a majority of black athletes are with white women. Which is not true! In the real world over 90% of black athletes date or are married to black women. But yet, when you look at this article, you get a good idea how easy it is for the media to frame and manipulate any topic. AOL sports could have easily used one of the many black athletes married to a black woman, just to keep us quiet. In today’s politically correct atmosphere, AOL writers should know better unless they want to be part of producing myths. Then this wouldn’t be a topic for us. Now that it is a topic of discussion, there are actual boneheads out there that will considered us racist and having something against white women. The issue isn’t who, or why someone is marrying a particular person. The issue is with the media. Why would any media outlet in today’s politically correct climate be so stupid and careless to create a list like that, unless they have agenda? We’re past contacting media outlets for the reasons why. Been there, done that. Because they tell us it’s just coincidence, or they use a certain criteria. This is getting tired. There are people out there who take this issue to heart, whether it is true or not. The media didn’t make a big issue when some of these loonies took this topic too seriously and went overboard with it. A couple years ago Miami Dolphins defensive end Jason Taylor and former Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Freddie Mitchell were among NFL players who received some of the 30 or so threatening letters sent to prominent, successful black people over the last two years. The FBI investigated the hate mail sent to black NFL players. Those letters, which include threats of castration and death, urged the men to "stop establishing relations with white females," according to the FBI. In addition to Taylor and Mitchell, several members of the New York Giants organization received racist and threatening letters and forwarded the hate mail to the NFL's security office. Also, Major League Baseball has informed the FBI that one of its players received a threatening letter. However, we will be accused of playing the race card or being race baiters, just for discussing the media’s role in this debate, while the media ignores the actions of real race haters who must believe everything the media tells them.
